Primary sterility means that married women, who live together with their spouse with normal genital functions for over two years, fail to be pregnant without contraception. And secondary sterility refers to the fact that women fail to be pregnant over two years after previous delivery or miscarriage, without contraception.  

 

Main Points of Diagnosis

Women who are unable to be pregnant for 2 years after marriage, or after the previous pregnancy, with normal intercourses and without contraception, can be considered to have sterility provided that her husband has normal genital function. 

Differentiation and Treatment of Common Syndromes     

1. Deficiency of the Kidney

Main Symptoms and Signs: Sterility long after marriage, delayed menstruation, little and pale menstrual blood, dark and gloomy complexion, lassitude in loins and legs, sexual hypoesthesia, pale tongue with white fur, deep and thready or deep and slow pulse.

Therapeutic Principle: Warming the kidney and nourishing the liver.

Recipe: Conceptive Pill with additional ingredients.

Main Symptoms and Signs: Sterility long after marriage, irregular menstrual cycle, abdominal pain before menstruation, impeded menstrual flow, scanty menstrual blood with dark color, fullness sensation in the breast prior to menstruation, irritability and tendency to anger, normal or dark red tongue with white and thin tongue coating, and taut pulse.

Therapeutic Principle: Soothing the liver to regulate the circulation of liver-qi

Recipe: Conceptive Decoction by Soothing the Liver.

3. Phlegm-Dampness

Main Symptoms and Signs: Sterility long after marriage, obesity, delayed menstrual cycle, or even amenorrhea in severe cases, excessive and sticky leukorrhea, pallor, dizziness, palpitation, fullness in the chest, nausea, white and greasy tongue coating, and slippery pulse.

Therapeutic Principle: Eliminating dampness and resolving phlegm.

Recipe: Modified recipe of Pill for Opening the Uterus.
