Aster Root (zi wan)

Radix Asteris

Properties: It is bitter and sweet in flavour, and slightly warm in nature. It is tropistic to the lung channel. Its sweetness is moistening and bitterness can send down abnormally ascending Qi and act specially on the lung channel. It can moisten the lung and send down rebellious Qi, relieve cough and asthma. It is slightly warm, not drastic, without dryness or astringing. It is used in compound prescriptions for cough and asthma, whether they are deficiency or excess types.

Effects: Nourishing the lung to send the adverse Qi down-ward, relieving cough and asthma.

Indications:

For treatment of cough due to exopathogen, it is usually used together with Herba Schizonepetae, Radix Platycodi, Radix Glycyrrhizae, Fructus Perillae, and other herbs having the functions of dispersing the lung and relieving exterior syndrome, cough and asthma; For treatment of deficiency syndrome of the lung and injury to Yin, chronic cough and hemoptysis, it can be used in combination with Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, Bulbus Fritillariae, Colla Corii Asini, and other herbs having the effects of nourishing Yin and the lung, relieving cough and hemostasis. 

Dosage and Administration: 5-10g.
