Introduction To Anemarrhena Rhizome (zhi mu)

 Anemarrhena Rhizome (zhi mu)

Rhizoma Anemarrhenae

Properties: Sweet, bitter in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the lung, stomach and kidney channels. The bitter flavour and the cold property of the herb purges heat, the sweet flavour nourishes the Qi and Yin systems and it is good at clearing the heat in tri-jiao so as to replenish Yin essence and moisturize the viscera. Because of the combined function of reinforcement and elimination, the herb is often used in cases of excessive heat in the Qi system and fever of deficiency type.

Effects: Clearing heat and fire, nourishing the Yin and moisturizing dryness.

Indications:

1. For treating excessive heat in the Qi system, high fever, dire thirst, it is often used in combination with gypsum known as Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) to clear away the heat, purge fire, and relieve restlessness.

2. For treating cough caused by lung-heat, with yellow and thick phlegm, it is often used in combination with fritillary bulb known as Ermu San (Powder of Anemarrhena and Fritillary) to clear away heat, resolve phlegm, moisturize lung and relieve cough.

3. For consumption of body fluid caused by febrile diseases, dry mouth and thirst, or deficiency of Yin-interior heat syndrome heat syndrome and diabetes, it is often used in combination with trichosanthes root, pueraria root, and ophiopogon root, etc. to nourish Yin and clear away heat.

4.For deficiency of liver-yin and kidney-yin, fever caused by deficiency of Yin, night sweating and vexation, it is often used in combination with the herbs for nourishing Yin and invigorating the kidney, and the herbs for clearing away the heat of deficiency type, known as Zhi Bai Dihuang Wan (Pill of Anemarrhenae, Phellodendron and Rehmannia).

Dosage and Administration: 6-12g, stir-baked with salt water for nourishing Yin and removing fire, unprepared for other purposes.
