Centipede (wu gong)

Properties: Pungent in flavour, warm in nature, it acts on liver channel, has the effects of checking endogenous wind to relieve convulsion and clearing obstruction in the channels to relieve pain. The effects is similar to that of scorpion but stronger, so it is indicated in syndromes of acute chronic infantile convulsion and headache, and also for scrofula and furuncles and carbuncles to resolve he masses.

Effects: Checking endogenous wind to relieve convulsion, clearing obstruction in the channels to relieve and clearing away toxins and resolving masses.

Indications:

1. For acute convulsion caused by high fever, tetanus, it is often used together with scorpion (Scorpio), gastrodia tuber (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), uncaria stem with hooks (Rmulus Uncariae cum uncis), arisaema tuber (Rhizoma Arisaematis) and cicada slough (Periostracum cinadia); for chronic convulsion due to deficiency of spleen, it is used with dangshen (Radix Codonopsis pilosulae), white atractylodes rhizome (Rhizoma Atractylodis macrocephalae), poria (Poria) and white stiff silkworm (Bombys Batryticatus).

2. For headache and migraine due to evil-wind, it is often used with scorpion (Scorpio), earthworm (Lumbricus), chuanxiong rhizome (Rhizoma Ligustic chuanxiong) and giant typhonium tuber (Rhizoma typhionii) to expel the wind-cold and clear obstruction in channels to relieve pain; for chronic rheumatic arthralgia, it is used together with monkshood root (Radix aconiti), earthworm (Lumbricus) and long-noded pit viper (Ancistrodon acutus) to disperse wind and clear obstruction in channels to relieve pains.

In addition, it is used to treat scrofula, furuncles and carbuncles, usually with tea leaf (Folium camelliae sinensis), as in powder for external use, or combined with scorpion (scorpio), walnut kernel (Semen Juglandis regiae), deer horn (Cornu Cervi) powder, ground in powder for drinking with wine.

Dosage and Administration: 1-3g or 1-3pieces of centipedes in decoction, 0.6-1g of powder for oral use, proper amount for external use.

Precautions: It is contraindicated in pregnancy.
