Abalone Shell (shi jue ming)

Properties: Salty in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on liver channel. It is effective for nourishing Yin and checking exuberance of yang, clearing away the from the liver to improve vision, relieving dizziness due to liver-yang and conjunctival congestion due to liver-heat.

Effects: Calming the liver-yang and checking exuberance of Yang, clearing away heat from the liver to improve vision.

Indications:

1. For hyperactivity of liver-yang, such as dizziness and blurred vision, dysphoria and irritable, the drug is used in combination with white peony root (Radix Paeoniae alba) (Radix Rehmanniae).

2. For conjunctival congestion, dysphoria and headache caused by excess of liver-heat transmitted upward along the meridian or channel, the drug is often used together with selfheal spike or prunella spike (Spi-ca Prunellae), chrysanthemum flower (Flos Chrysanthemi), capejasmine fruit (Fructus Gardeniae), butterfly-bush flower (Flos Buddlejae). For blurred vision due to deficiency of Yin of liver and spleen, the drug is used in combination with dodder seed (Semen Cuscutae), prepared rehmanniae root (Radix Rehmanniae), cassia seed (Semen Cassiae) and dogwood fruit (Fructus Corni).

Dosage and Administration: 15-30g. Crushed and decocted earlier than other drugs.
