Chinese Yam (shan yao)    

Rhizoma Dioscoreae

 

Properties: The herb is sweet in flavour, neutral in nature, and acts on the lung, spleen and kidney channels. Sweet, neutral, moist, not dry and not greasy for invigorating Qi and nourishing Yin, it is good for invigorating Qi and Yin of the lung, spleen and kidney channels, inducing astringency in the middle-jiao, to control spermatorrhea and reducing urination. It can be used in compatibitity with other herbs to treat deficiency of the lung, lingering cough, asthma, deficiency of the spleen, anorexia, loose stool, deficiency of the kidney, spermatorrhea, frequent micturition and other syndromes.

Effects: Invigorating Qi, nourishing Yin controlling spermatorrhea and reducing urination.

Indication:

1. For lingering cough and asthma of deficiency type caused by deficiency of the lung or by deficiency of both lung and kidney, it is often used in combination with dangshen, straight ladybell root, schisandra fruit, dogwood fruit, psoralea fruit and other herbs for tonifying the lung and kidney and improving breathing to relieve asthma.

2. For deficiency of the spleen and stomach, anorexia and loose stool, it is often used in combination with white atractylodes rhizome, poria, coix, seed and other herbs for strengthening the spleen and arresting diarrhea.

3. The herb is often used in combination with schisandra fruit, dogwood fruit, flatstem, dodder seed and other herbs for tonifying the kidney and controlling spermatorrhea, to treat defickiency of the kidney-qi, failure to astringe the lower-jiao and seminal emission; and with dodder seed, psoralea fruit, ginkgo nut, white atractylodes rhizome, argyi leaf and other herbs for warming Yang and arresting leukorrhea, to treat deficiency of the kidney, watery leukorrhea and cold pain in the waist and abdomen.

In addition, The herb is oftenused in combination with herbs for promoting the generation of the body fluid and quenching thirst to treat diabetes.

Dosage and Administration: 10-30g. Used stir-baked for strengthening the spleen and quenching thirst, and used unprepared for others.
