Tetrandra Root (fang ji)

Radix stephaniae Tetrandrae

 

Properties: Bitter and pungent in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the urinary bladder, spleen and kidney channels. Being pungent for dispersing and eliminating the wind, bitter for lowering and removing the liquid retention, and cold for clearing heat, eliminating the wind-dampness, relieving edema and clearing the stagnated fire, the herb is suitable for arthralgia caused by syndrome of wind-dampness, edema with interior heat.

Effects: Expelling wind-dampness, inducing diuresis to alleviate edema.

Indications:

1. For Arthralgia caused by wind-dampness, with redness, edema and hot pain of joints, it is often used with coix seed (Semen Coicis) and tale (Talcum); for arthralgia caused by wind-cold-dampness, the herb is used with ledebouriella root, pubescent angelica root and aconite root (Radix Aconiti).

2. For edema caused by wind-dampness, difficult urination, diaphoresis and aversion of wind, it is often used in combination with astragalus root (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) to dispel the wind, reinforce the Qi and alleviate edema.

Dosage and Administration: 5-10g.
