Oriental Wormwood (yin chen hao)

Herba Artemisiae Capillaris

Properties: The herb is bitter in flavour, and cold in nature. It acts on the spleen, stomach, liver and gallbladder channels. Being bitter and cold for inducing diuresis, clearing heat and dampness, normalizing functions of the gallbladder and curing jaundice, it is an important her for treat jaundice. Slightly cold but not drastic, the herb is often used in appropriate combination with other herbs to treat Yang jaundice and Yin jaundice.

Effects: Eliminating damp-heat, normalizing functions of the gallbladder and curing jaundice.

Indications:

The herb often used in combination with rhubarb and capejasmine fruit for expelling heat to loosen the bowel, normalizing gallbladder function to cure jaundice, such as Yinchenhao Decoction, to treat jaundice due to damp-heat, excessive heat-evil, abdominal fullness and constipation; with umbellate pore-fungus, poria, oriental water plantain rhizome and other herbs for inducing diuresis and excreting dampness, to treat excessive damp-evil, oppressive chest, greasy fur and conslipation; and with prepared aconite root, dried ginger and other herbs for warming Yang, dispersing cold, removing dampness and treating jaundice, such as Yinchen Sini Decoction, to treat jaundice due to cold-dampness, yellow and darkish complexion, fatigue and aversion to cold, that is Yin jaundice.

In addition, the herb can also be used to treat pruritus due to damp sore.
